Mulesing-free wool from England
- No flies, no mulesing
What does mulesing-free mean?
Mulesing is a practice in sheep breeding where the sensitive skin around the tail area is removed. This procedure is carried out to prevent infestations by blowfly maggots, which are particularly prevalent in Australia and New Zealand. Such infections can be fatal for sheep. Essentially, removing excess skin is a sensible thing to do.
The problem, however, is that mulesing is usually performed without anesthesia or painkillers. This fact makes the procedure an equally painful alternative to fly infestation.
Although the topic is hotly debated and more and more breeders in Australia and New Zealand are making efforts, the procedure is still regularly used and it is not clearly communicated which farms actually work without mulesing.
Since the problematic flies do not occur in England at all, yarns from this region are 100% mulesing-free. This also applies to the fibers of our high-quality boiled wool.
